Button Time

“Spring time is button time”?  It must be hard trying to write something new about fashions in clothes. Year after year, season after season, they have to try to generate excitement from small details, and promote trends as if  they had never happened before. Since the second half of the 19th century buttons have featured on women’s clothing, for both functional and decorative purposes having (almost) completely taken over from lacing and hook/eye fasteners. Even with the improvements to snap fastener early in the 20th century, and the patenting of early versions of zips, buttons have never been out of fashion, although their type and use may change.
